Thrive
Thrive Room
At Lapage Primary School and Nursery, the Thrive Room provides a safe, caring and inclusive environment where pupils receive the support and guidance they need to widen their skills and fulfil their potential. Thrive helps children grow in confidence, build positive relationships and develop the social and emotional skills that are essential for successful learning.
The Thrive approach is delivered by two dedicated members of staff who create a welcoming environment where pupils feel valued, listened to and supported. Their positive relationship serves as a role model for the children, demonstrating respect, empathy and cooperation. Within this space, pupils are encouraged to express themselves, recognise their emotions and develop strategies to manage them effectively.
The Thrive approach focuses on understanding children’s developmental needs and shaping inclusive learning that ensures every child can access education successfully. It aims to fill gaps in early experiences by promoting self-respect, communication and positive interaction with both peers and adults.
Outdoor learning is an important part of Thrive, enabling pupils to learn through active discovery, exploration and mindfulness. Children also share responsibilities such as feeding the fish or caring for the resident dwarf hamster, helping them to develop responsibility, empathy and pride.
The Thrive Room is underpinned by six key principles:
-
Children’s learning is understood developmentally
-
The classroom offers a safe base
-
Thrive is central to developing self-esteem
-
Language is a vital means of communication
-
All behaviour is communication
-
Transitions are significant in children’s lives
Through this approach, pupils strengthen their social skills, confidence and self-respect, while learning to take pride in their behaviour and achievements. Particular emphasis is placed on language development and communication, giving pupils the time and support to listen, to be listened to and to share their ideas. Social learning opportunities, such as snack time or helping peers during activities, further embed these skills in meaningful ways.
The Thrive Room ensures that pupils’ individual needs are recognised and met, creating an inclusive learning environment where every child is supported to flourish, thrive and achieve.
